Students from Davis Aerospace High School will bring history to life throughout the museum by portraying notable African Americans from Detroit, as well as influential figures who have made significant contributions to American history.

Panel Discussion: Let’s Talk: The Real Conversation On the State of African Americans’ Health with author Collin Mays and Dr. Ijeoma Opara

Collin Mays serves as the President and Founder of LMS Solutions, a strategic planning and fundraising firm aimed at assisting nonprofits with capacity building. He has led focus groups dedicated to philanthropy, community impact, and cardiovascular health, has spent his entire career in the public sector, and truly believes in the power of giving back. Mr. Mays has been featured in multiple publications and has received various awards for his professional work. Additionally, he is an author and dedicated champion for the Alzheimer’s Association, and the American Heart Association.

Dr. Ijeoma Nnodim Opara is a double-board certified physician scientist activist and Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Wayne State University School of Medicine and Wayne Health. Her mission in life is to dismantle white supremacist delusion by eliminating anti-Black racism in medicine, healthcare, and public health while centering and celebrating Black brilliance, abundance, and joy. She is an NIH-funded health equity community engagement implementation researcher and the founding
director of the “Health Equity and Justice in Medicine” (HEJiM) initiative, co-founding director of Wayne State University Global Health Alliance, and co-created the Global Urban Health & Equity curriculum. She is an internationally renowned award-winning educator, scholar, and thought leader in antiracism and anti-oppression, decolonization, and Black liberation and focuses on the joy, abundance, and brilliance of Blackness, and an influencer for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
