DENNIS ARCHER HEADLINES A GROUP OF HONOREES BEING SALUTED BY THE DETROIT HISTORICAL SOCIETY’S BLACK HISTORIC SITES COMMITTEE

The Detroit Historical Society’s Black Historic Sites Committee is observing their 42nd anniversary this year, and the celebration continues with a special fundraising event on Friday, July 26 at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, 100 Strand Drive on Belle Isle. Cocktails and a strolling supper begin at 5:30 p.m., with the program following at 7 p.m.

            Themed as “Looking Back, Moving Forward,” the event celebrates a group of individuals who have achieved African American firsts in their respective fields.  The honorees include:

  • The Honorable Dennis Archer, the first African American president of the American Bar Association. 
  • Melvin Jefferson, the first black fire commissioner with the City of Detroit.
  • Robert L. Millender (1916-1978), Detroit attorney and civil rights activist.
  • Tom Turner (1927-2011), the first black elected president of the local AFL-CIO.
  • Charles C. Diggs (1922-1998), the first African American Congressman elected from Michigan.
  • Carole Anne-Marie Gist, the first African American to win the Miss USA title.
  • Anna Diggs Taylor, the first African American appointed to a federal judgeship in Michigan and the first chief federal judge in Michigan’s Eastern District.

            WDIV-TV Local 4 Meteorologist, Andrew Humphrey will serve as master of ceremonies for the event.

            The Black Historic Sites Committee of the Detroit Historical Society, founded in 1971, is a group of volunteers that promotes a greater understanding of the contributions of African Americans to the history of metro Detroit and the state of Michigan.
