The G.A.R. Building was designed by archtech Julian Hess and constructed as an appropriate structure for meetings and other G.A.R.-related activities. The original construction cost was split between the Grand Army of the Republic (who paid $6.000) and the city of Detroit (who paid the remaining 44,000 of the total cost). Construction commenced in 1897 on the five-story building.

After sitting vacant for many years, the G.A.R. Building was purchased from the city of Detroit in November 2011 by media production firm Mindfield. Mindfield moved into the top two floors and has been renovating the G.A.R. They lease the ground floor for restaurants and have dedicated a memorial to Civil War veterans.
