Why the Negro Leagues Still Matter
WELCOME ADDRESS: Wayne County CEO Warren Evans.
PANEL DISCUSSION: A panel of Negro League experts will discuss the league's centennial, the Detroit Stars, Black Baseball in Michigan and the enduring legacy and significance of the Negro Leagues.
Panelists include: Gary Gillette, Chair and Founder of the Friends of Historic Hamtramck Stadium and Detroit Stars historian; Phil Dixon, nationally prominent Negro Leagues historian, author, and speaker; Mitch Lutzke, author of the award-winning book The Page Fence Giants; Mike ‘Tiger’ Price; Detroit sports and music historian and Detroit Sports Zone board member; and Ron Teasley, former Negro League player, Wayne State Athletic Hall of Famer, and Detroit Northwestern coach.
Moderated by Jamon Jordan, Detroit historian, educator, and founder of the Black Scroll Network.
VIRTUAL PRESENTATIONS: Following the panel, ten prerecorded video presentations on the Negro Leagues and related topics will be posted on our website – available for free viewing.
AFTERNOON TOUR: In addition, the Friends of Historic Hamtramck Stadium and the Black Historic Sites Committee will host a free, self-driving tour of Negro League sites in Detroit throughout the afternoon – beginning at 1:00 p.m. and expected to last until 6:00 p.m.
The tour itinerary will be posted online along with MP3s with each site’s information for self-guided tours. Participants are invited to join the group by driving in their own vehicles to each site – in order – and hearing a brief presentation before traveling to the next site. Participants may join or depart the tour at any point. There is no charge for the tour.
