In Pursuit of Hope is a Focus: HOPE film by Alexa Borromeo and Donna Jackson that features the narratives of multi-generational residents of the HOPE Village, a community in north central Detroit, about their personal experiences of the 1967 Detroit civil uprising and their perspectives on race, equity and progress 50 years later. Through oral history interviews, residents developed a deeper understanding of and hope for the future of the HOPE Village. The film team included community youth and adults who actively served as assistant photographers and interviewers, thereby creating a product of greater authenticity and ownership.

  • 2 pm 1967

1967 is a historical drama set in Detroit, Michigan during mid July. The story follows three best friends, Scooter, Woodrow, and Ron. Summer is in full swing and Ron just received the one thing that matters to him the most, his driver’s license. A taste of freedom, new responsibility and feeling proud, leaves Ron itching to go out and have some fun on the town. Ron coaxes Scooter and Woodrow to take a spin down to the automotive parts store, in his Father’s clean and shiny Cadillac. Little do they know on that beautiful summer day, the Detroit riots have just broken out, beginning the destruction of their hometown.

Can they survive the social upheaval, and injustice of martial law or will they be swept into a vortex of illegal criminal behavior that leads to catastrophe and unexpected loss?

Join us afterwards to for a discussion about the film with the Writer and Director Naeemah Stewart.
