Homes of Tomorrow

Fans of mid-century modern architecture will certainly appreciate these photographs from the Davis Hillmer Collection taken at J. L. Hudson’s Department Store. In 1946, at the very beginning of the post-war housing boom and expansion of suburbia, the Ladies’ Home Journal Homes of Tomorrow exhibition gave downtown shoppers an almost futuristic idea of what the neighborhoods of tomorrow might look like. The flat roofs and floor-to-ceiling windows of these International Style house models must have been shocking to some people, but onlookers would also have been impressed by the modern amenities and conveniences these new homes offered.
