Admissions F.A.Q.s
Frequently asked questions about admissions:
1. What is the Detroit Historical Museum admissions policy?
On November 1, 2019, the Detroit Historical Museum returned to a paid admissions policy. Learn more about the change in a letter from our CEO.
Mandatory general admission fees will be $10 for adults; $8 for seniors, students, active military and first responders; and $6 for children ages 6-17. Admission for all children under 6 and Detroit Historical Society members will continue to be free.
2. Who is considered a student?
Any enrolled student with an ID who attends school.
3. Who qualifies for senior admission?
Anyone 65 years or older is eligible to pay the senior admission fee of $8.
4. Who is considered active military?
Anyone with a current military ID from any country.
5. Who is considered a first responder?
Any police officer, firefighter, or EMS provider with a badge or ID.
6. How do I purchase a ticket to visit the Detroit Historical Museum?
You can purchase full-price tickets at any admissions desk at the museum or in advance through our website (starting November 1). Senior, student, active military and first responder tickets can only be purchased at the admissions desk at one of our museums.
7. What information will be requested from visitors purchasing tickets?
Name, address and zip code. If a visitor declines to provide information he or she may still purchase a ticket.
8. For discounted admission, what will be considered valid proof of age or valid student identification?
We will accept a range of identifications, including:
- Michigan state driver's license
- Michigan state identification card
- City of Detroit ID card (D-ID)
- Library card
- Student ID
9. How will the Detroit Historical Society make sure that asking for identification does not discourage some from visiting?
The Detroit Historical Society is committed to welcoming all visitors, including those who may be undocumented. We recognize that some visitors who are entitled to a discount may not have, or want to share a traditional form of identification, such as a driver’s license. Accordingly, we will accept a variety of other documents that demonstrate eligibility for a discount, including electronic records accessible from a smart phone such as a recent bill or bank notice with a Detroit address. DHS will not collect or keep any identification records. No identification is required to purchase a regular ticket for admission.
10. As a member of the Detroit Historical Society, how will this change in policy affect me?
As a member, you will not see any change in your museum access privileges as a result of this updated policy. Your continued support ensures the future success of The Society. Members will continue to receive benefits including free general admission, museum store discounts, priority registration and discounted ticketing to programs and tours.
You will also have access to a new suite of enhanced benefits that include digital membership cards, express admission for you and your guest(s), exclusive access to the museum for new exhibitions, invitations to members-only events and special members-only hours.
