Join us for a tour of two locations on the campus of the University of Michigan. Start at the William L. Clements Library for a tour and presentation. In 1920, Clements offered his collection to the University of Michigan along with funds to build a suitable home for it. Detroit architect Albert Kahn designed the Library in the Italian Renaissance style. The Library opened in 1923 with a collection of rare books, newspapers, maps and many other treasures. Recently, the Clements Library had a large renovation, see the newly renovated areas of the Library and receive a presentation from Brian Dunnigan.
“A Newly Discovered 1790 Detroit Map”
The Clements Library has made a significant acquisition of a previously unknown manuscript plan of Detroit as it was in 1790. Titled “Rough Scetch [sic] of the King’s Domain at Detroit,” by D.W. Smith. The plan captures Detroit at a significant time in its history.
Then enjoy lunch at the Original Cottage Inn with their Classic Italian Buffet. The second location is the University of Michigan, Museum of Natural History. Enjoy a guided tour of the Hall of Evolution- home to their prehistoric life collection. Learn about fossilization, paleontology, evolution and geologic time. Explore the world of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals by observing their many adaptations and what they tell us about their lifestyles.
