Algonquin Club of Detroit and Windsor
Established in 1934 by Burton Historical Collection secretary Milo Quaife, the Algonquin Club of Detroit and Windsor is an international, not-for-profit organization focused on the study of Great Lakes region history. Staffed entirely by volunteers, the club is purported to be the only known international local historical society.
The Algonquin Club holds regular monthly meetings from September through May, which alternate locations between Detroit and Windsor, and feature a dinner and historical presentation. The club sponsors regional history events, such as the Historical Society of Michigan’s annual Local History Conference, of which the club is a founding sponsor. They also publish a monthly newsletter called The Algonquin. The Algonquin Club name was chosen by the club's early members "to perpetuate the memory of the family of Indian tribes that originally inhabited this area.”
