Postponed - Women Who Empower: Suffrage and Solidarity
March 28 2020 | 12:00pm to March 29 2020 | 3:55pm
After much consideration and in alignment with the requests of our governor, the Detroit Historical Museum is postponing this event. Please watch for a rescheduled date. Click here for more information about our Coronavirus response.
It has only been a century since (most) women won the right to vote, but suffrage was only the beginning. For many, it meant the renewal of a new fight. As questions of voter suppression and block voting dependency ring through great halls and inspire impassioned discourse at dinner tables, the Detroit Historical Museum is taking a look at the role of women, historically - and, of course, right now - to setting the course of our democracies.
Our annual Women Who Empower event will feature Suffragette sash-making and workshops for young people on how they can be civically engaged and help empower every citizen to use their right to vote. Learn more about the new voting rights quest and the role of women within it in a one-on-one conversation with Detroit civil and human rights legend, poet and educator, Dr. Gloria Aneb House, professor emeritus at the University of Michigan and 2019 Kresge Eminent Artist. She will share her experiences as a young woman working for SNCC in the Deep South and how that informed her incredible life's work.
Free with general admission.
