Yiddish Film Night: "Uncle Moses" - Free Admission!

When poverty and persecution compel his Polish landsmen (person from the same town or region) to leave their shtetl, "Uncle" Moses, the crude and lusty former butcher, welcomes them to the promised land of his Lower East Side clothing factory.  But is it the land of milk and honey for all?  On loan from the National Center for Jewish Film, this famous and entertaining Yiddish talkie (based on Shalom Asch’s novel and starring Maurice Schwartz) includes brand-new English subtitles.

Family Program: Shopping for Shabbat

Explore In the Neighborhood: Everyday Life on Hastings Street, Jewish Historical Society of Michigan’s exhibition located in the Robert and Mary Ann Bury Community Gallery (2nd floor), to find all of the supplies needed for Shabbat dinner. Hurry to the Streets of Old Detroit to make your own Shabbat candles.

Lecture: Julia DiLaura "Schlussel Bathhouse Archaeology"

2:30pm to 4:00pm

In 1907 Louis Schlussel opened a bathhouse at the corner of Alfred and St. Antoine streets, featuring Detroit’s first documented mikveh (Jewish ritual bath).  Come learn about the 2019 archaeological dig that recovered a fascinating and forgotten slice of history.
