Virtual event! Sarah E. Ray: The Rosa Parks of Bob-lo Island
She’s remained largely unknown, but the courage of Detroiter Sarah Elizabeth Ray continues to affect us today. Known as the “Rosa Parks of the Bob-lo Boat,” Ray was removed from the S.S. Columbia in 1945 because of her race. Through the NAACP, she filed a criminal complaint against the company that went all the way to the Supreme Court. The ruling - in her favor - paved the way for the later Brown v. Board of Education case, which would overturn the longstanding "separate but equal" doctrine.
