The Detroit Historical Museum will be featuring a free jazz concert in the Gallery of Culture during Late Nights at the Museum on October 10.
Enjoy two sets, 5:30-6:30PM and 6:45-7:45PM.
The Wolverines breathe new life into a musical canon with roots that reach back a hundred years or more—to the mouth of the Mississippi River and the cultural port city of New Orleans, the “birthplace of jazz.” Like the renowned 1920s territory band of the same name, its members are based in the midwest—Christopher Tabaczynski (Northville, MI) leads the band and plays assorted woodwinds including C-Melody saxophone, Albert-system clarinet, and bass saxophone alongside Dave Kosmyna (Toledo, OH) on cornet and clarinet while Alex Belhaj (Ann Arbor, MI) and Erik McIntyre (Flint, MI) pluck and strum guitar/banjo and Shannon Wade (South Lyon, MI) holds it down on string bass.
When these five musicians join forces, the music becomes a whole that is greater than its parts. Informed by recordings of jazz pioneers (Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, Johnny Dodds, Sidney Bechet, Jimmie Noone, Bix, Tram, & Lang, et al), the Wolverines honor musical history without being limited by it. Each performance celebrates a spirit of collective spontaneity and creates a momentary experience that you must simply be there to enjoy.
Advance registration is preferred but not required.
