DHS Museums Are Certified Autism Centers

cac badgeThis summer, the Detroit Historical Museum and the Dossin Great Lakes Museum earned the Certified Autism Center (CAC) designation awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), ensuring that staff members are trained and equipped to better support neuro-diverse individuals and their families. To achieve this designation, guest-facing staff completed specialized training, certification, and onsite reviews, which prepare them to offer effective planning tools and resources for autistic and sensory-sensitive guests In addition, IBCCES toured each museum and made specific recommendations for improving the environment for neuro-diverse individuals.

Accessibility is a central tenet of the Detroit Historical Society’s core values. In partnership with IBCCES, we've made a number of improvements, including:

  • Newly refined exhibition spaces
  • Museum-specific sensory guides
  • Posted signage to indicate areas of high stimulation
  • Sensory bags available for check out at the museum front desks
  • Tours that incorporate more sensory-friendly accommodations
  • Special hours for individuals who would benefit from a less stimulating experience as part of many family events
