A Toast to the 2018 IMLS National Medal Winners

The Detroit Historical Museum is among the 29 finalists for the 2018 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the nation's highest honor given to museums and libraries, for its Detroit 67 Project.

On Tuesday, May 1, Institute of Museum and Library Services will announce the winning organizations. Please join us at the museum to participate in the announcement and toast the winners!

You will enjoy a tour of the historic Players Playhouse and dinner before the Players’ Spring Invitational performances of their most highly-acclaimed one-act plays from this theatre season. Following the Shakespearean tradition, all the roles will be played by men.

The public is invited to experience Detroit 67: Perspectives through a dialogue-based, facilitated experience. Your group will visit the exhibition and participate in discussions surrounding the events of the turbulent summer of 1967. Following the facilitated portion, groups will be given additional time to reflect, experience portions of the exhibit individually, and to ask questions.

Hamtramck, named after a French Revolutionary War hero, Colonel Jean Francois Hamtramck, was a peaceful German-American farming community in the early 1900s. The 1910 addition of the Dodge Brothers automobile plant attracted large numbers of Polish laborers, and the village quickly grew. Hamtramck is now one of the most diverse cities in America. It was incorporated as a city in 1922, when it decided to in to protect itself from becoming annexed by Detroit.

This vintage documentary from WWJ-TV – which later became WDIV-TV Local 4 – is narrated by Ernie Harwell and directed by Edward Mayo “Catfish” Smith. It follows the Tigers during the ’68 season to show Detroiters and baseball fans around the nation why 1968 is known as the “The Year of the Tiger.”

Admission is FREE. Shown at the Detroit Historical Museum. Running time: 34 minutes.

Jazz on the Streets of Old Detroit

The group, made up of seven members, will deliver an exciting mix of both Latin and straight-ahead jazz, with an emphasis on rich arrangements.
