Detroit Design 2067

From April 2-7, twelve Detroit-area high school students will work with four Detroit-serving community groups at the Detroit Historical Museum in an intensive program that uses the history of Detroit’s 1967 uprising, combined with design thinking concepts to address current social issues facing the city. The students were grouped and assigned to one of our four participating community partner organizations that each had a connection to the events of July 1967. Those include:

Founded in 1997, Atwater Block Brewery made its debut in Detroit, Michigan in the historic Rivertown district. The original owner’s reasoning and focus was to bring back the Bohemian style lager that Stroh’s Brewing Company had made famous in the mid 1800s.

Spring Film Series: Superior Lights on the Shipwreck Coast

In 1877, the U.S. Life-Saving Service opened four life-saving stations along a coast, often called the “Graveyard of the Great Lakes.” Stations were opened at Vermillion Point, Crisp Point, Big Two Hearted River and Sucker River/Deer Park. More shipwrecks occurred along this stretch of coastline than anywhere else on Lake Superior.

Admission is FREE. Shown at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum. Running time: 58 minutes.

In honor of National Poetry Month, the Detroit Historical Society will welcome several talented poets to share their perspectives on the events of 1967 through the power of poetry in an all-new event on Saturday, April 21. Come listen to powerful pieces by One Single Rose, Deonte Osayande, Aurora Harris, Brenda Perryman, Peace, Detroit Bleu and Caesar Torreano.

After the performances, guests will be able to join in a round-table discussion with the poets and reflect on their pieces.

Art House, originally the Elisha Taylor home, is a Gothic Revival home completed in 1872. It is located in the historic Brush Park neighborhood just north of downtown Detroit. Its original interiors have been preserved, and since 1981 it has served as a center for art and architectural study and a tour destination for those wanting to relive an era of graciousness that was once found in the city of Detroit when it was known as the “Paris of the Midwest.”
