Holiday Break Film Series

The Dossin Great Lakes Museum will be open all week between the 2017 Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

From Tuesday, December 26 – Sunday, December 31, the Dossin Great Lakes Museum will feature daily film screenings at 11 am and 1 p.m. each day:

How do children who are too young to stay up until midnight celebrate the New Year? They attend the Noon Year’s Eve celebration at the Detroit Historical Museum! Preschool and elementary-aged children and their families can make their own noisemaker, write a time capsule letter, enjoy cookies and hot cocoa and, most importantly, ring in the New Year with a countdown to noon! 

Admission is FREE.

MLK Jr. Day: "Bring the Dream to Life"

Celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on MLK Day with “Bring the Dream to Life” on Monday, January 15 at the Detroit Historical Museum. The program hosted by the Black Historic Sites Committee will feature children’s activities including making your own Martin Luther King Jr. coloring and activity book, open mic poetry with a focus on “the spirit of Dr. King” hosted by One Single Rose as well as cupcakes to celebrate what would have been the activist’s 89th birthday.

Kirk in the Hills was the dream and vision of Colonel Edwin S. George, a Detroit businessman whose gift of his home and estate (Cedarholm) in 1947 made the Kirk possible. The congregation was organized by the Presbytery of Detroit in 1947, and the first services were held in Cedarholm Chapel (formerly Colonel George’s music room).

Fed Challenge 2018

The High School Fed Challenge is an academic competition that provides students grades 9–12 the opportunity to study the U.S. economy through the lens of the U.S. central bank. The program is designed to encourage students to learn more about economics and about the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), the policymaking group that makes interest rate decisions to foster economic strength and stability.
