Youth Advisory Council

yac 2019

Over the past two years, the Detroit Historical Society has been honored to host a cohort of 10-12 students who have been excited to jump into museum work headfirst. The Society’s Youth Advisory Council is a public history leadership development program for high school students in the Detroit Metro area. Council members gain first-hand experience in how the Society tells Detroit’s stories, why those stories matter, and together with their cohort and DHS staff, chart the future of our modern museum. Through understanding the stories of our city, councilmembers will explore the question: What is the role of museums in building community?

Over the course of a year, students are embedded into the museum world where they will have the opportunity for a “hands-on” museum experience. Councilmembers will get a first-hand look at how the Society develops programs, exhibits, and engages with our community to ensure that every voice is heard. Councilmembers will use the knowledge and skills they develop throughout the program to advise and assist in planning a public program to be hosted by the Detroit Historical Society, as well as advise the Society on youth-focused programming for the museumCouncilmembers will receive a stipend for their time upon completion of the program. YAC alumni will also have an opportunity to participate in a six-week internship at the Detroit Historical Society, as well as have access to a plethora of opportunities to expand and develop their own personal and professional connections and community.
