We Fought Our Own War: The Arsenal of Democracy

After the United States entered World War II, thousands of young men enlisted to join the fight overseas and many industries in Detroit changed to wartime production. With many workers now in the military, factories across the city were looking for a new workforce. Black men, White women and later Black women started working in the factories and had to fight their own battles.

We Fought Our Own War was developed in partnership with Wayne State University’s Public History Program and crated by student historians.
