The Hustle: Shopkeepers and Stylists
NOW OPEN through October 8, 2023 in the Allesee Gallery of Culture
Detroit’s Black community has a long-standing tradition of entrepreneurship that dates to the early 1800s with masons, loggers, farmers and traders. In our modern era of box stores and conglomerates, Detroit still contains a rich mosaic of small Black-owned businesses that keep the city thriving, despite decades of economic hardship. Detroiters have developed a strong culture of work and determination. To succeed in Detroit, you need to know how to hustle.
See the fourth exhibition in our series, featuring Shopkeepers and Stylists. Honorees were selected from crowd-sourced nominations in 2022.
