The Hustle: Foodies, Artists and Entertainers

NOW OPEN through January 8, 2023 in the Allesee Gallery of Culture

Detroit’s Black community has a long-standing tradition of entrepreneurship that dates to the early 1800s with masons, loggers, farmers and traders. In our modern era of box stores and conglomerates, Detroit still contains a rich mosaic of small Black-owned businesses that keep the city thriving, despite decades of economic hardship. Detroiters have developed a strong culture of work and determination. To succeed in Detroit, you need to know how to hustle.

To celebrate these entrepreneurs and small businesses, the Detroit Historical Museum's new initiative The Hustle is recognizing 34 businesses that invest, elevate and enrich Detroit in a year-long series of museum exhibitions. See the first in our series, open now, featuring Foodies and Artists & Entertainers.
