The Hustle: Creators and Makers

NOW OPEN in the Allesee Gallery of Culture

Detroit’s Black community has a long-standing tradition of entrepreneurship that dates to the early 1800s with masons, loggers, farmers and traders. In our modern era of box stores and conglomerates, Detroit still contains a rich mosaic of small Black-owned businesses that keep the city thriving, despite decades of economic hardship. Detroiters have developed a strong culture of work and determination. To succeed in Detroit, you need to know how to hustle.

See the third exhibition in our series, featuring Creators and Makers.
