What Does Freedom Mean in Detroit: A Neighborhoods Day Partnership Event

August 3 2019 | 10:30am to August 4 2019 | 1:55pm

Join us at the Detroit Historical Museum for "What Does Freedom Mean in Detroit?" an interactive experience where we will unveil our Four Freedoms Quilt, a special community-focused project reflecting the voices of more than 200 residents and visitors, generously designed and completed by the Great Lakes African American Quilters' Network.

In partnership with Arise Detroit Neighborhoods Day.

The program will also highlight unique aspects of Detroit’s history, including local Freedom Festivals and the work that community organizations, including Detroit Justice Center do every day to protect and preserve the rights of Detroiters.

Welcoming Michigan will join us onsite to share information about their work and to address questions visitors have re: how to be neighbors and advocates for immigrants in this current social/political climate.

Finally, we are very pleased to offer screenings (on the hour) of the popular short-film that debuted at this year's Freep Film Fesitval: With Love From Idlewild. This poignant story showcases filmmaker Tinisha Brugnone’s travels through Idlewild – a historically African American vacation destination once considered the Black Eden of Michigan – with retired building engineer and local hunter/forager Charles Paige.

When you're finished, be sure to head across Kirby Street to the Detroit Public Library for fun and family-friendly games and activities.
