About the exhibition: Following the police raid on the Stonewall Inn on June 28, 1969 in New York City, the gay rights movement changed forever, as activists adopted more provocative tactics and demanded equality, respect and safety. In Detroit, the Gay Liberation Front fought for a new path forward through newspapers and protesting in the streets. Building on this activism, LGBTQ+ Detroiters built a community which flourished as it stood together in face of police oppression, violence and the AIDS epidemic. While the photography and artifacts in Invisible No Longer: LGBTQ+ Detroit do not cover the full story, they offer an insight into the lives and work of this vibrant part of Detroit.
