Make the Detroit Historical Museum a part of your homeschool studies. This fall, we’re offering specially designed workshops for homeschoolers. Each two-hour workshop takes place in one of the museum’s permanent exhibitions and is designed to be an interactive lesson that encourages students to examine objects and ideas through a variety of activities, including discussion, crafting, writing, role playing and games.

Workshops include:

• Making of the Motor City – Explore the intricacies of how Detroit became the undisputed Motor City in the early 20th century and highlight automotive operations today. Take part in a group assembly line and craft your own automobile.

• Early Detroit & Michigan Statehood – We’ll dive into the early fur trade and handle some of the materials that Native Americans traded with the French. We’ll discuss the growth of Detroit, and explore how Michigan became the 26th state in the USA.

• Detroit Innovators and Inventions – Pop, Spark, and Fizzle!! Join us as we highlight several unique inventions created here in Detroit. We love the Model T, but there so many other amazing innovations to talk about. Let your creativity take hold and design your own invention with us too!!

• An Hour (or so) in their Shoes – Follow local Detroiters as you go through time in the Streets of Old Detroit. Role play and create your adventure as clues guide you through their lives and their decisions.

Workshops cost $7 per person and pre-registration is required. Participation is limited to 30 persons. Children must be 7 or older. Parents must pay workshop fee if they would like to join their child. Visit detroithistorical.eventbrite.com for full details and registration.

Bring a lunch to enjoy in our lunchroom after your workshop.
