The film shows the people, both on and offstage, who made the event possible. From the organizers, artists and more than 1.5 million fans – this film is comprised of 50 artist interviews, live performance footage and historic footage.

DStacey “Hotwaxx” Hale

For as long as there is music and those who faithfully dance, there will always be a need for the Godmother of House Music, DJ Stacey “Hotwaxx” Hale. Detroit’s 1st Female of House Music plays dancefloor bangers and orchestral melodies with live music fusions. Hotwaxx Hale has made a massive impact in the American music culture, whether it’s playing in famous theaters like the Apollo, or legendary underground dance music clubs like ‘Studio 54,’ and ‘The Warehouse.’ She also has an international presence, which includes past performances in London, Ibiza, France, Mexico, Berlin, Amsterdam, Toronto, and across the USA. Hotwaxx Hale is the first female DJ who played house music on the radio in Detroit in the late 80s and after several decades continues to play a major role in curating the soundtrack of our lives. Thriving in the city that started techno, she somehow maintains a perfect flow by tastefully blending house and techno with funk, hip hop and Motown soul, which is why she continues to have a diverse, multi aged, devoted following.

EVENT UPDATE

The Detroit Historical Society has released new details about its highly anticipated closing event for 2000/2020: Celebrating the 20 Years of the Electronic Music Festival in Detroit. Hosted on the weekend traditionally reserved for Detroit’s legendary electronic music festivals, the May 30 closing event is designed as a celebration of Detroit’s electronic music, its people, and its history.  It will feature music by DJ Stacey “Hotwaxx” Hale, and a panel discussion moderated by WDET personality, Chris Campbell “DJ Cambeau.” The event will also include a screening of The Drive Home, a documentary about the 2000 Detroit Electronic Music Festival that started it all, and of course the Detroit Historical Museum will be open allowing guests to chat with guest curators Rita Sayegh and Tim Price and see the exhibition before it sunsets in late June.

The line-up for the panel discussion shifted this week after Detroit Techno legend Derrick May decided not to attend.  “Derrick stepped back when it appeared that his presence would distract from the spirit of the celebration,” said Tracy Irwin, Chief Exhibitions and Enrichment Officer.  “This project and our exhibit, 2000/2020: Celebrating the 20 Years of the Electronic Music Festival in Detroit has been about the history of the festivals and the vibrant community that grew around them. We all agree that this history is bigger than one person and by stepping aside, Derrick ensures that the closing celebration will reflect that history and remain as vibrant and joyful as the festivals themselves.” The panel will feature industry giants Carl Craig, Kevin Saunderson, Doug Coombe, Paxahau’s Sam Fotias, filmmaker Tim Aten and special guest Juan Atkins.
