Black Historic Sites Bus Tour

April 20 2019 | 10:30am to 3:30pm

Since 1971, the Black Historic Sites Committee, an affinity group of the Detroit Historical Society, has been committed to discovering, documenting and marking the numerous sites significant to the history of Detroit’s African American community.

On Saturday, April 20, 2019, the Black Historic Sites Bus Tour will return featuring three new sites that will unveil the history of Black Baseball in Detroit, from historic Hamtramck Stadium to the former home of Turkey Stearnes and on to Comerica Park.   The National Negro League was formed during a time when African Americans were barred from playing on Major League teams. Baseball historian Gary Gillette will lead the first half the tour and local historian Jamon Jordan will lead the second half of the tour. The tour will also be joined by the Joyce Stearnes, the daughter of Turkey Stearnes who played for Negro Leagues’ Detroit Stars. He is considered one the best baseball players of all time!

The bus will leave from the Detroit Historical Museum at 10:30 a.m. sharp. Lunch is included in the ticket price. Advance ticket purchase is recommended for this special event, but tickets may be purchased on the day of the tour if available.
