150th Anniversary of the Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation

Join the Society's Black Historic Sites Committee on January 6, 2013 for a special event at the Detroit Historical Museum that commemorates the first reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in Detroit at historic Second Baptist Church in 1863. The event will feature poetry readings by authors from Detroit-based Broadside Press; storytellers; readings of the Emancipation Proclamation by local ministers, including Rev. Dr. Kevin M. Turman of Second Baptist and tours of the new Doorway to Freedom: Detroit and the Underground Railroad exhibition. Due to anticipated demand and limited seating in the Booth Auditorium, this hour-long program will be offered twice, once at 1 p.m. and again at 3 p.m.
