Freedom Riders tells the powerful, harrowing and ultimately inspirational story of six months in 1961 that changed America forever. From May until November 1961, more than 400 black and white Americans risked their lives—and many endured savage beatings and imprisonment—for simply traveling together on buses and trains as they journeyed through the Deep South.

Third Thursday Speaker Series: WSU Student Researchers

6:00pm to 7:55pm

Graduate and undergraduate students from Wayne State’s History Department will take the stage to present their research from the Fall 2019 semester. Each student will showcase their Detroit-centric work. Topics will range from the fur trade in early Detroit to psychics during the turn of the 19th century and a 1970s LGBTQ-led wildcat strike. Come support the next generation of historians expanding Detroit’s historical record.

You and a guest are invited to join us for a casual reception to meet new members while enjoying music, refreshments and docent-led gallery tours. This invitation includes complimentary parking during the event.

Open to all membership levels. Advance registration is required. Guests names must be listed at time of registration.

The Detroitist Book Talk and Signing

Please join us to celebrate Detroit writer Marsha Music (aka Marsha Battle Philpot) and the launch of her long-awaited solo book, The Detroitist.

Ms. Music will read from the book, discuss the origins of this volume of writings on Detroit, including her seminal essay, "The Kidnapped Children of Detroit" and her epic poem "Just Say Hi (The Gentrification Blues)." 

Books will be available for purchase in the museum store. 

Free with general admission. Registration is required.
