Join the Detroit Historical Society as we tell Detroit’s story.
The Detroit Historical Society’s Past>Forward Campaign represents an exciting effort to tell more of the stories that make Detroit so unique. Through new and enhanced exhibits at the Detroit Historical Museum in Midtown and a new core exhibit at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle, the Society is committed to enhancing its role as the region’s storyteller!
The Detroit Historical Museum will feature exhibits such as Detroit: The Arsenal of Democracy, which will tell the story of how Detroit and its automobile assembly lines transformed to manufacture the machinery of war during World War II; the Allesee Gallery of Culture, which will showcase our region’s rich social history; and the Gallery of Innovation, which will celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit of the Detroiters whose creations changed our world! These new exhibitions will open in November 2012 as part of the Museum's exciting grand re-opening!
A new, interactive core maritime exhibit – Built by the River – will be featured at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum and will open in April 2013.
The campaign will also bring about the creation of new field trip experiences and classroom resources designed to meet state learning standards that will make learning local history more fun than ever!
New, dynamic learning experiences will engage families and school-age audiences as well as provide experiences that involve and inform museum visitors of all ages.
In addition, the campaign includes the digitization of thousands of our most historically significant artifacts made available online for researchers, students and history buffs alike!
