The Edmund Fitzgerald was launched June 8, 1958 at River Rouge, Michigan. At 729 feet and 13,632 gross tons, she was the largest ship on the Great Lakes until 1971. On November 10, 1975, the Edmund Fitzgerald was lost with her entire crew of 29 men on Lake Superior, 17 miles north-northwest of Whitefish Point, Michigan.
