Detroit Historical Society Special Events take place at both the Detroit Historical Museum and the Dossin Great Lakes Museum. Many are one-day events that often take place annually. Others are special lectures featuring notable speakers that the Society has the unique privilege of hosting for both its members and those that love history.

Salute to Coaches Weekend

Detroit Historical Museum
Saturday, March 13 (10 a.m. - 5 p.m.)
Sunday, March 14 (Noon - 5 p.m.)

Youth sports teams (ages 17 and under) and their coaches can explore the upcoming exhibit, Detroit’s Beloved Sports Coaches, for FREE on select days as part of the “Salute to Coaches Weekends.”  All team members and coaches have to do is come on any of the weekends listed below wearing a visible demonstration of their youth team affiliation (cap, jersey, etc.) and they will receive FREE museum admission.

Eggstravaganza
Detroit Historical Museum

Join us for a celebration of spring!  This family-friendly event, back for a second year, has something for everyone.  Children 12 and under will decorate and fill their own bags with trinkets and candy.  The entire family will enjoy the Spring Variety Show by Richard Paul, hear a story, learn about old fashioned games and enjoy light refreshments.

Supporting sponsors for Egg-stravaganza are Cabot Cheese and LaVanway Sign Company. Community partners include the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit, and Youthville Detroit.
Annual Flea Flea Market

Historic Fort Wayne (6325 W. Jefferson)
Saturday-Sunday, April 10 & 11
10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Antique and bargain hunters will find collectibles, contemporary treasures and a variety of arts and crafts. 
Tours of the Historic Fort Wayne complex will be offered each day and will include the Star Fort built in the 1840s, the Commanding Officer’s House, the Spanish-American War Guard House and the NationalMuseum of the Tuskegee Airmen.  Refreshments and baked goods will also be for sale.

 

FREE admission!

 

Secured parking - $5 per vehicle

 

Tours - $3 per person

 

Proceeds from the Flea Market and tours will benefit the work of the Detroit Historical Society Guild.  Parking proceeds will be used by the City of Detroit Recreation Department to assist with future Historic Fort Wayne programs.

 

Vendors can purchase tables for only $30 or three tables for $75.

Dossin Great Lakes Museum Regatta

Sunday, April 25

 

Another year of racing brings new competition for the Detroit Rowing Club.  St. John’s Jesuit and St. Ursula from Toledo will compete for this year’s trophy!

 

The races begin at 12:15 p.m. with prime viewing available from DeRoy Hall. The awards ceremony is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

 

Guest may also join us inside the Museum for indoor rowing demonstrations offered from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Dossin Gala
Dossin Great Lakes Museum

6 p.m.

The evening will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Dossin Museum and will include a silent auction filled with maritime-related items, a strolling dinner, and casino style games.

Guests will also have the chance to see two exciting new exhibits, Life on a Long Ship: Great Lakes Sailors and a special exhibit dedicated to the Dossin Great Lakes Museum’s 50th Anniversary.  The exhibits open April 24, 2010.

The event is sponsored by the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority.

Our extensive collection includes more than 200,000 artifacts. Guests will get an exclusive look at some of most popular and historically interesting collections in the nation. This facility is not normally open to the public but, for one night only, it will be yours to explore!

 

Guided tours will escort guests through the CRC to view our Political Campaign Material Collection, Historic Toy Collection, classic car models from throughout the 20th Century, fashion accessories, “Made in Detroit” artifacts — and a special exhibit featuring artifacts that portray

life during the 1960s.

Etiquette Tea Party

Detroit Historical Museum (Cadillac Café)

Noon – 3 p.m.

 

Children ages 6 to 14 and their adult companion will enjoy desserts, tea or lemonade and an interactive and fun etiquette lesson. Everyone will receive a free etiquette booklet as well as the chance to win several exciting door prizes.
