Collection Loans
The Detroit Historical Society accepts loan requests from museums as well as other educational public non-profit institutions that can meet our loan requirements. Loans to private institutions will be considered if the mission of the Society is furthered thereby and all loan conditions can be met. Loans are not made to private individuals, private residences or commercial establishments.

Conditions Governing Loans from the Detroit Historical Society
Loans of materials from the Detroit Historical Society collections are made subject to the borrower's agreement to the following conditions:
- All loaned items become the responsibility of the borrower and must be fully insured against loss, damage or deterioration. A Certificate of Insurance may be required.
- Items must be returned in the same condition they were received. They are not to be cleaned, repaired, retouched or altered in any way, unless consent is given in writing by the Detroit Historical Society Curator of Collections. Any work so performed must be documented in writing and photographs.
- If an item is damaged, the Curator of Collections must be informed at once, followed by a full written report. Arrangements will be made for the repair or return of the item, as directed by the Curator of Collections. All expenses associated with repairs will be billed to the organization to whom the item was loaned.
- The borrower will maintain constant and adequate protection from the hazards of fire, insects, dirt, theft and mishandling by unauthorized or inexperienced persons or the public. Packing and transportation shall be by safe methods approved in advance by the Curator of Collections, and subject to special instructions. Fireplaces may never be used in rooms with collections artifacts.
- No museum artifact should be subjected to extreme fluctuations of temperature or humidity, or to strong, unfiltered light. Light sources should be shielded with ultra-violet filters. Exhibit cases containing light sources should be ventilated to prevent heat build-up.
- Clean white cotton gloves should be worn when handling textiles, costumes, or metal artifacts such as silver, pewter, brass or copper.
- Textile objects require special considerations:
- Costumes may never be worn.
- When displayed, they must be out of the public's reach.
- Textiles and costumes may not be suspended from pins or altered for display.
- Light intensity should not exceed 5-foot candles.
- Loose beads, sequins, etc., should be retained and returned with the object.
- Special packing materials, including acid-free tissue or boxes, or customized crates, in which objects are sent to the borrowing institution, must be retained and used when the objects are re-packed for return, or replaced with mutually agreed upon materials.
- Borrower agrees to pick up and return items by the specified date.
- Objects on loan may be photographed for publicity purposes.
- Vehicles may never be driven, or moved to any other location for display from the location of the loan.
- Borrower is responsible for paying for all professional shipping charges.
- Loan Fees to other museums and educational institutions is $75.00 per artifact, annually. Loans to other types of organizations will be considered if the mission of the Society is furthered thereby and all loan conditions can be met. Loans are not made to private individuals, private residences or commercial establishments. Loan fees to organizations other than museums or education al institutions vary based on a variety of factors including the duration of the loan and the number of artifacts borrowed.
- The Detroit Historical Society reserves the right to prescribe how items are displayed, or hung/mounted to ensure the safety of the loaned item(s). Any costs related to complying with these requirements are the sole responsibility of the borrower. Additional charges for conservation, transit, labeling, installation, etc. will also be the responsibility of the borrower.
