TOURS
Historical Perspectives Tour
Recommended for grades 2-5
During this 90 minute guided tour of the Detroit Historical Museum, students will learn about significant geographic, economic, social and cultural developments of the city. Students will:
- LEARN that beaver fur was the primary reason why the French settled in the Detroit area.
- DISCOVER that Antoine de La Mothe Cadillac chose Detroit because its natural features made it easy to reach by boat and to defend from invaders.
- UNDERSTAND how and why trading and bartering occurred between Native Americans and early European settlers.
- EXPLORE how natural resources – like iron and copper – from northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula were important to the development of Detroit.
- SEE that Detroit’s early industries - refining metal and building rail cars, ships and stoves - made it an ideal location for the automotive industry.
- UNDERSTAND how Detroit became the Motor City by exploring the stories surrounding Henry Ford and other automobile pioneers.
- EXPLORE Detroit’s role in the anti-slavery movement as an important stop on the Underground Railroad.
- WALK through the Streets of Old Detroit exhibit to see how Detroit looked and how Detroiters lived in 1840, 1870 and 1900.

PROGRAMS
StoryLiving
Recommended for grades 2-6.
A professional storyteller brings history – and your students – to life through drama, group pantomime, role playing, songs and creative problem-solving. Choose from two exciting options!
- The Underground Railroad: In the mid-1800s, thousands of African Americans escaped from slavery and passed through Detroit on their way to Canada. Students will discover the role that the Detroit River and the people of Detroit played in the Underground Railroad. Download a list of MI GLCE’s met by this program.
- The Fire of 1805: In 1805, a fire threatened to destroy Detroit. Students will become 19th century firefighters who must work together to save the community. Download a list of MI GLCE’s met by this program.
- Time: Tuesday – Friday, 10:00am – 11:00 or 12:30pm - 1:30
- Group Size: 100 maximum

Historic Mackinac on Tour
Recommended for grades 2-6.
Historic Mackinac comes to life through exciting demonstrations and hands-on activities. With the help of costumed interpreters, students step back in time to learn about colonial life.
Time: 90 minutes – March 12-16, 2012
Group Size: Maximum 100
Cost: $350 per group. Add a guided museum tour for just $3 per person!

WORKSHOPS
History Detective Game
Recommended for grades 6-12.
Middle and High School students are invited to become “History Detectives” as they explore the Detroit Historical Museum’s Streets of Old Detroit exhibit. Students learn about Detroit in the 1840s, 1870s, and 1900s as they seek for answers to questions in store fronts and decipher clues to find their next stop. Played in teams of up to five students, the activity engages students in their local history, helps them understand its change over time, and encourages them to make connections to the present day. Trading Posts and Animal Pelts: Detroit’s Early Fur Trade
(Available in January 2012)
Recommended for grades 3-5.
In this combination tour and workshop, students will explore Detroit’s first two hundred years with a guided tour of our Frontiers to Factories: Detroiters at Work, 1701-1901 exhibit. Then, they will participate in a facilitated trading game where they must barter with each other for furs and trade goods. Download a list of MI GLCE’s met by this program.

- Group Size: Maximum 30
- Cost: $6 per student
- Chaperones: Minimum one chaperone per 10 students
